Press Release Appointments to Social Welfare Advisory Committee ******************************************************************** The Government announced today (November 2) the appointment of five new members and re-appointment of five incumbent members to the Social Welfare Advisory Committee (SWAC). All the appointments are for a term of two years with effect from December 1 this year. The five new members are Mrs Teresa Tsien Wong Bik-kwan, Miss Maggie Chan Mei-kit, Mrs Agnes Mak Tang Pik-yee, Ms Lam Shuk-yee and Mr Christopher Law Kin-chung. Mrs Tsien is a Lecturer at the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She has good knowledge of various welfare services and is involved in welfare-related bodies such as the Community Chest of Hong Kong. She is also a member of the Guardianship Board. Miss Chan is the Director of Social Work Services of a welfare Non-Governmental Organisation, Caritas - Hong Kong and also the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Service Development and Liaison of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service. She is currently a member of the Council of the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for the Mentally Handicapped. Mrs Mak is the Executive Director of an IT consultant firm. She was a member of Lotteries Fund Advisory Committee. Ms Lam is the Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions. She is also a member of the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund Board and has served on the Committee on Financial Assistance for Family Members of Those Who Sacrifice Their Lives to Save Others and the Labour Advisory Board. Mr Law is a director of an architect company. He is also a member of the Women's Commission and has also served on various welfare-related committees including the former Steering Committee on Study of Family Commission and the Social Workers Registration Board. Meanwhile, five incumbent members have been re-appointed. They are Dr Miranda Chung Chan Lai-foon, Dr Jimmy Wong Chi-ho, Mr Timothy Ma Kam-wah, Prof Tang Kwong-leung and Mr Silva Yeung Tak-wah. The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, welcomed the new members and those re-appointed to the Committee. He looked forward to their contribution to the development of welfare policy issues, including studying the long-term development planning for social welfare in Hong Kong. He also thanked the three outgoing members - Prof Japhet Sebastian Law, Ms Christine Fang Meng-sang and Ms Marina Wong Yu-pok - for their valuable advice to the SWAC during their term of appointment. The functions of the SWAC are to keep social welfare services under continuous review and to advise the Government on all matters of social welfare policy.
